With the Opposition MPs protesting against the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in Parliament, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday named a panel of lawyers for a State committee and nominated lawyers in every Assembly constituency to monitor, check, and assist in the exercise.

Mr. Selvaperunthagai said the lawyers would help the cadre fill up the forms and check whether the exercise was being carried out in a free manner. “They will check whether the Election Commission of India’s guidelines are being followed. We want to eliminate fake and double voting. We already have co-ordinators and observers,” he said.

“The Booth Level Officers are overworked and unable to cope with the stress. We believe that the one-week extension [of the exercise] is not enough. The SIR should be conducted in a thorough manner, without the pressure of time limit,” he said.
