A 16-year-old intermediate student was found dead in her hostel room in Bachupally on Monday.

The deceased, a native of Makthal village in Narayanpet district, was a first-year student of Sri Chaitanya Junior College. According to Bachupally Inspector Upender Rao, the girl sought permission to go out for a day, but the college refused her request.

“Her mother also asked the management on Sunday to allow the girl to accompany her, but they insisted she stay back for an exam scheduled on Monday. Convinced, her mother left for home,” the official said.

On Monday, the girl returned to her room at around 2.30 p.m. after class, and locked the door. Police suspect she took the drastic step between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Her roommates alerted the hostel staff after realising something was wrong.

Statements from her roommates indicated that the girl was distressed for several days and was struggling to stay in the hostel. “They said she wanted to leave,” the inspector said.

Following a complaint from her parents, police registered a case of abetment against the college management.

An investigation is under way.
