A remand prisoner identified as Kumara, 44, of Shimoga district in Karnataka allegedly attempted to end his life in the district jail here on Tuesday.
He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Police said that Chidambaram of A Ramalingapuram had lodged a complaint about three months ago that he lost ₹6.47 lakh, which he had withdrawn from a bank and kept in his two-wheeler. Sattur police, who investigated the crime, found that Kumara had lifted the bag from the complainant’s vehicle.
Based on his confession, the police arrested him and a court remanded him in judicial custody. It is said that Kumara was wanted in a few criminal cases and that the police from Karnataka had planned to arrive here and take him for court appearance.
He was found lying unconscious in the jail restroom and the officials rushed him to the hospital.
