The Kerala High Court has passed an interim order directing the State government and the departments concerned not to physically dispossess 60 traditional farmers from their properties that are located adjacent to the Vellayani Lake, except in accordance with law.

The direction follows a plea by the farmers, seeking steps not to proceed with acquisition of their plots at Kaliyoor and Venganoor villages under the guise of developing Vellayani Lake, without adhering to due process of law, pending disposal of the plea.

They contended that delays by the Water Resources and Agriculture departments in addressing waterlogging have caused ongoing issues, raising fears of their lands being acquired for less compensation than deserved.

The matter has been posted for hearing on 8 December.
