The United Democratic Front (UDF) has alleged serious lapses on the part of the election authorities in identifying sensitive booths in Kannur. Addressing the media at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office here, UDF leaders claimed that several booths that had witnessed violence in previous elections were excluded from the sensitive list this time.

DCC president Martin George said a formal complaint had been submitted to the District Collector on the issue. He alleged that sensitive booths were finalised solely on the basis of a police report, which, he said, covered only around 60% of the vulnerable locations. As the cost of installing web cameras is being collected from candidates, he said the omission of key booths required scrutiny by the State Election Commission.

UDF leaders reiterated that the front was united in the Kannur Corporation elections, and that any rebel candidature would not affect its prospects.

The UDF also accused Communist Party of India councillor K.V. Anita of circulating a communal message against KPCC member Rijil Makkuty, who is contesting from the Adikadalayi division. Mr. George alleged that she had shared an old image once widely used by the BJP against the Congress. He said this raised suspicion of “LDF-BJP understanding” in the division.

UDF chairman P.T. Mathew, Muslim League district president Abdul Kareem Cheleri, K. Sahadulla, and C.A. Ajeer were present.
