Officials responsible for the recent rescue and safe release of a wild elephant, which had fallen into a canal feeding water to a mini hydel power plant in Shivanasamudra, were felicitated by Eshwar B. Khandre, Forest Minister, at Kollegal on December 3.

The elephant spent about three harrowing days unable to come out of the canal. Senior forest department officials, who monitored the situation, helped in its safe rescue.

During that three-day period, the elephant was fed, the outflow from the Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs was stopped, and heavy-duty cranes were deployed to lift the tusker from a depth of 60 feet. Subsequently, the elephant, which was tranquilised before being lifted by the crane, was administered an antidote and released back into the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.

The officials felicitated included Raghu, Deputy Conservator of Forests of Mandya, Mahadevaswamy, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Gaviyappa, Range Forest Officer, Adarsh, veterinarian, and Akram, a sharp shooter.

The Minister said their teamwork was appreciable and those who perform such exemplary work deserve praise and recognition.
