As the Northeast monsoon has been active and farming activities have begun in many places in Ramanathapuram district, the Agricultural Department has received a total stock of 572 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer stock, required for samba season.

Officials said that in Ramanathapuram district, a total of 907 mm rainfall was recorded in the current year.

Utilising the Northeast monsoon rains, agricultural crops, including paddy (rice), millets, pulses, groundnut, and oilseed crops, as well as horticultural crops such as chillies, coconut, and fruit crops, are being cultivated on an area of 1,69,800 hectares, they added.

The 572 MT of urea fertilizer stock, required for the samba season, was received through Madurai and the stock was dispatched to Primary Agricultural Co-operative Credit Societies (PACS) – 142 MT, private fertilizer retail outlets – 430 MT, in the district.

Assistant Director of Agriculture (Information and Data Control), P. Nagarajan, who oversaw the fertilizer distribution, said a total stock of 6,275 MT of fertilizers was maintained to meet the needs of the crops under cultivation.

The fertilizers in storage included Urea: 2,031 MT, Diammonium Phosphate: 957 MT, Potash: 467 MT and Complexes: 2,820 MT.

Mr. Nagarajan noted that the fertilizer sellers were mandated to display the stock details and the price list of the fertilizers where farmers could easily see them.

“During sales, fertilizers must only be sold using the Point of Sale (PoS) machine after obtaining the Aadhaar card details from the farmers. A sales receipt must be provided to the farmers,” he added.

Those flouting the rules would be subjected to strict action, as per the provisions of the Fertilizer Control Order, 1985.
