The Telangana government, which has set its sights on achieving a $3 trillion economy by 2047 through various strategies, is also driving rural development alongside Hyderabad’s urban growth with several flagship initiatives aimed at strengthening infrastructure, empowering women and conserving water resources.
As part of this effort, the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development department has launched an ambitious mission to upgrade rural road networks through programmes such as HAM, PMGSY, CRR and MRR.
With the aim of building 7,449.50 km of rural roads and connecting unlinked Gram Panchayats with respective mandal and district headquarters, the government has sanctioned ₹16,007.56 crore and floated tenders for 17 packages via e-procurement under the HAM (Hybrid Annuity Model).
Further, 201 km of roads and 34 bridges have been completed at a cost of ₹455 crore in the past two years under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana). Meanwhile, works on 25 projects covering 66.98 km at a cost of ₹66.86 crore are progressing rapidly under PM-JANMAN.
Additionally, 2,163 works worth ₹4,174.83 crore taken up under CRR (Construction of Rural Roads) are in progress. And the administrative approval has been granted for 1,121 new works worth ₹2,709.82 crore since December 2023, with 600 km of roads already completed.
For the maintenance of rural roads (MRR), 2,861 projects costing ₹3,347.44 crore have been in progress since December 2023.
With the completion of 5,61,370 water conservation works, including restoration of ponds, construction of check dams, farm ponds and rainwater pits in several districts, the State has emerged as a national leader in rainwater harvesting and earned national awards of up to ₹10 crore for exemplary efforts under the Jal Sanchay- Jan Bhagidari category at the 6th National Water Awards 2024.
Meanwhile, another flagship scheme, Indira Mahila Shakti (IMS), is transforming rural women’s lives by promoting entrepreneurship and self-reliance under the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).
With a target of making one crore women millionaires, the government facilitates bank loans exceeding ₹20,000 crore annually for Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups are being encouraged to venture into owning buses, running petrol pumps, maintaining solar plants, operating fish trucks and managing canteens.
Referring to the success of SHGs, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka) said that the State government is planning to provide global marketing facilities for products made by rural women.
