The Coimbatore Corporation has decided to install shelters at 49 bus stops, using its general funds, along key roads in the city.
According to the Corporation, there are 375 bus stops within its limits.
Of the 49 locations identified, 20 are in the south zone, 18 in the west zone and 11 in the north zone. Each shelter will cost ₹7.10 lakh, and ₹3.47 crore has been allocated for the project.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said many shelters removed during flyover projects on Avinashi Road, Trichy Road and the Ukkadam–Aathupalam stretch had not been re-installed and several other locations either had damaged structures or lacked shelters.
He said the earlier plan to install shelters through the public–private partnership mode is being implemented at locations where private firms have come forward. In places where private parties did not show interest, the Corporation has decided to take up the work using its own funds to avoid delays, as commuters continue to wait in sun and rain.
The shelters will be built with precast modular units, with seating and digital screens displaying bus route numbers. Tenders will be floated soon, and installation is planned for completion by the end of January 2026, the Commissioner added.
