The Department of Paediatrics at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on childhood epilepsies recently.

The seminar sought to strengthen clinical expertise and enhance public awareness regarding childhood epilepsy — one of the most common neurological disorders affecting children.

Epilepsy affects 3 to 6 per 1,000 children worldwide and 5.59 per 1,000 population in India, with 40% of global new cases occurring in children under 18 years.

According to Jipmer, while 70-80% of children achieve seizure freedom with one or two medications, 25-30% may develop drug-resistant epilepsy, which poses the risk of long-term neurological damage to the developing brain.

The CME witnessed the participation of leading paediatric neurologists from major institutions across Chennai, Vellore, Bengaluru and Jipmer. The sessions focused on identifying seizure types, making evidence-based choices among the numerous anti-seizure medications available, and understanding when investigations, such as EEG and MRI were required.

Experts also shared insights on evaluating the underlying causes of epilepsy and preventing long-term complications.
