The recent spell of heavy rainfall over the past few weeks has left several key roads around the Central Bus Stand in Tiruchi severely damaged, causing hardship to commuters and motorists.
Uneven road surfaces and potholes have become common sights on major stretches, with the top layer eroded in many places. The damaged patches have led to frequent skidding incidents, particularly affecting two-wheeler riders.
Important stretches around the Central Bus Stand, such as Rockins Road, McDonalds Road, VOC Road, and Williams Road, have suffered significant deterioration. Some of these roads that were laid recently have also been damaged following the downpour.
With heavy vehicle movement continuing through these roads, the loose surface material has begun to dislodge, worsening driving conditions. Motorists say the situation has grown increasingly unsafe, especially during nighttime travel.
āIt is very difficult to navigate at night. Vehicles struggle to navigate as gravel is scattered across the road, and the potholes are deep. In some places, the road has completely worn off,ā P. Vasanth, said a motorist.
According to residents, poor drainage systems remain a key cause of repeated road damage during the monsoon. The stormwater drains along McDonalds Road, in particular, are narrow and frequently clogged, allowing rainwater to stagnate.
Residents urged the authorities to carry out immediate repair works and ensure proper stormwater drainage facilities to prevent recurring damage. They have also called for proper milling work before relaying damaged stretches, along with strict enforcement of road quality standards.
A sum of ā¹20 lakh per zone had been allocated for road repair. Corporation officials said that a temporary patchwork would be undertaken soon, followed by permanent restoration once the rain subsides. Meanwhile, the civic body has sought ā¹100 crore from the State government for relaying stretches that are dug up for road works.
