Former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M. M. Hassan welcomed the Kerala High Court’s decision permitting the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the Sabarimala gold theft case.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Hassan said the ED’s involvement could lead to a more comprehensive probe.

“I hope we can expect a more thorough inquiry if the ED investigates the case. The agency stepped in considering the suspected links between the Sabarimala gold theft and international idol-smuggling rackets. Once the ED begins probing, more Marxist leaders will likely end up in jail. The CPI(M)’s role in the gold heist will also come to light,” he said.

Referring to CPI(M) State secretary M. V. Govindan’s remark that the ED notice in the Masala Bond case was worth no more than the paper it was printed on, Mr. Hassan said the comment only validates what the Congress leaders have been asserting.

“The ED notices during the last Lok Sabha elections—particularly in the Karuvannur bank fraud case—had politically benefited the BJP. A similar attempt is happening now. In the Masala Bond case, land worth ₹466 crore was purchased in violation of norms. But the ED shows no willingness to investigate that. This is why we call it an election stunt,” Mr. Hassan pointed out.

On the Rahul Mamkootathil issue, Mr. Hassan said the KPCC president had already clarified the party’s stance. “The party has taken strong action. This is the first time the KPCC has received such a complaint, and it has been forwarded to the DGP. If Mr. Mamkootathil had been within the party’s organisational structure, an internal probe would have been possible. Since he is not, we handed it over to the police respecting the seriousness of the complaint. Further steps will be based on the court’s directions,” he said.
