Members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) and Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi (MJK) staged protest outside MSS Waqf Board College here on Wednesday condemning the district administration for not giving enough attention to the college administration.

S. Hussain, VCK, district organiser, said, the college management which falls under the ambit of district administration has failed to ensure proper sanitation and other basic requirements like drinking water, toilet facilities, among others.

“Due to the recent rains in Madurai, rainwater along with the sewage water has overflowed onto the college premises and playground,” he added.

Additionally, with algae developing in the stagnant water, the college sports ground, three departmental buildings and toilets were filled with a mix of rainwater and sewage, he added.

The effluents from nearby households were directed to the college premises. With the existence of such poor sanitation, how could the students study without getting affected by infections, he questioned.

Though the students themselves staged a sit-in protest about two months ago, the district administration and the college administration failed to take note of their grievances, Mr. Hussain stated.

He asked who would be held responsible if any of the students or teachers fell ill from infections spreading due to the stagnant wastewater in the college.

Police deployed in the area detained the protesters and took them to a private marriage hall in the city
