Conservancy workers stage protest to press demands

Conservancy workers continued their protests at Ambattur Estate despite rain on Wednesday, opposing the privatisation of solid waste management by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The demonstration, led by the Left Trade Union Centre (LTUC), was to highlight that sanitation staff were entitled to ₹761 per day and toilet facilities in each ward since April 1, 2025, as per a Government Order.

The workers also raised concerns about the lack of protective equipment, such as raincoats, for those involved in cleaning work during monsoon. They also demanded fair compensation and reinstatement of jobs under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission.
