The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which will introduce a new lane segregation system at the pick-up zone in front of the airport’s two terminals on December 8, has defended its decision amid reports that cab drivers were against this move.
BIAL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hari Marar on Thursday said that it has the support of all stakeholders, including all the nine licensed cab operators at the airport.
“At KIA, the only area where the experience is not so great is on the kerbside. One of the reasons for this is because a large number of people operate in that area in an undisciplined manner. People come, park their cars there for extended periods of time. We always wanted to implement something like this (lane segregation system) where we allow people to come in freely, park there, get out and load their bags without any problems. But they should not overstay. They are free to stay for eight months, but beyond that they need to move on, otherwise they will have to pay a fee,” Mr. Marar said.
According to the BIAL, the airport will give eight minutes of free use of the zone for all the users beyond which ₹150 will be charged for overstay from 8 minutes to 13 minutes, and ₹300 for 13minutes to 18 minutes. Any vehicle overstaying beyond 18 minutes will be towed to the nearest police station, and applicable fines and towing charges will be levied.
Mr. Marar said that the cab drivers who are legally authorised to operate will not oppose the new rules.
“It is those who are not operating legally are raising this question. We have support from every single stakeholder that this is the right move and we have nine licensed cab operators and they support us,” he said.
