The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is set to prepare the upcoming budget proposals keeping in view its expanded purview. The size of the budget could go up by at least ₹1,500 crore to ₹2,000 crore, in order to serve the area expanded from 650 square kilometres earlier to nearly 2,000 square kilometres after the merger.

The proposals will be presented to the standing committee in a week, officials informed. The Council meeting to approve the proposals could take place in January, after which they will be sent to the government for consideration with regard to inclusion in the state budget proposals.

On Wednesday, after the government order notifying the merger of the peripheral urban local bodies (ULBs) into GHMC, orders were issued by the Commissioner R.V. Karnan deputing deputy municipal commissioner rank officials for taking over the charge of the ULBs under supervision by the zonal commissioners. Orders were also issued converting the ULBs into GHMC circles, and deputing their charge to the zonal commissioners as monitoring officials.

By Thursday evening, designated GHMC officials took over the files and minutes of all the 27 erstwhile municipalities and corporations, and displayed the name of GHMC prominently on the office buildings.

Mr.Karnan informed that the draft notification of ward delimitation would be issued very soon, inviting claims and objections. All in all, the process of final notification would be completed by December 27, he said.

Three key ordinances were passed by the State Cabinet earlier amending the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019 and the GHMC Act, 1955, and approved by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to facilitate the expansion of the GHMC up to the Outer Ring Road including all the ULBs within.
