The Kerala High Court on Thursday (December 4) asked how a person like Suraj Lama, a Bengaluru resident who was deported from Kuwait to Kochi and has been reported missing since October 10, was allowed to walk free without being entrusted to any authority concerned.

The court observed that the deported person walked out of the airport here without being handed over to any authority. It also asked the Centre’s counsel to clarify the protocol that must be followed when a citizen is deported back to India. The court sought comprehensive details of the matter from the State government and posted it for hearing on December 10.

The development comes two days after the High Court ordered the Director General of Police to submit details of a body recently found in a marshy area in Kalamassery, suspected to be that of Suraj Lama. It had also directed the Superintendent of the Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery, where he was reportedly admitted, to submit reports on his medical history.

Earlier this month, the court had impleaded the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and the Social Justice department in a habeas corpus plea filed by Santon Lama, son of Suraj Lama. The Thrikkakara police had taken Suraj Lama into custody on October 8 and transported him in an ambulance to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery, from where he is said to have gone missing on October 10.

His son had filed a plea before the High Court, seeking steps to trace his father, who was reportedly suffering from memory loss.
