West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (December 4, 2025) said that had her government not gone ahead with Special Intensive Revision (SIR) then President rule would have been imposed in the State.
“If we had not allowed the SIR, they would have imposed President’s rule without voting. Do you understand Amit Shah’s trick? We are not that stupid, Babumoshai, Godibhai! We will do it, we will fight. We will win and show it,” Ms. Banerjee said while addressing a public meeting in State’s Murshidabad district.

The remarks by the Chief Minister assume significance as the Trinamool Congress which had initially opposed SIR have reconciled with the revision of voter list. The Chief Minister urged people to not to be afraid of SIR and submit their documents.
The Chief Minister that she will not allow National Register of Citizens (NRC) or any detention camp in the State. “Luckily I was born in Birbhum! Otherwise they would have called me a Bangladeshi too. Listen, I will not allow NRC to be done in Bengal. Even if they cut my throat, I will not allow any detention camp to be built here, I will not expel anyone,” she said..
Speaking at the public rally, the Chief Minister gave the message of communal harmony ahead of December 6. “Every year on December 6, Sampriti Diwas is celebrated. People of all religions participate there. Majorities will protect minorities, that is the rule. Bengal respects all religions. But it will not accept communal forces,” she said.

Earlier in the day the Trinamool Congress suspended Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, who had claimed that he will lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6.
While Ms. Banerjee did not refer to Mr. Kabir but added that some “traitors take BJP’s money to stoke communal tensions”. She said that “in every religion there are betrayers” and would never accept “politics of riots”.
The West Bengal Chief Minister invoked the pluralistic legacy of the district and said, “We cannot forget the history of Murshidabad. Siraj-ud-Daulah is revered in every home here. This is the land of the Nawabs. It has holy places of all religions”. “History teaches us that betrayal brings ruin and harmony brings strength,” she added.

Murshidabad district has witnessed communal riots over the Waqf ( Amendment) Bill in April this year. The Chief Minister tried to allay fears about the new legislation amidst reports that her government is uploading details of Waqf properties on a central government portal.
“Some people are misleading the minorities. They are saying that we have not done anything about Waqf. This is also a complete lie. We had passed a resolution against the central law in the State assembly. We had said that property cannot be taken away by force,” she said. The Chief Minister cautioned people not be believe in rumours that mosques and graveyards have been registered as government properties
