Opposition leader and DMK Puducherry convenor R. Siva has asked Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to allay public concerns about the Union Territory (UT) being allegedly used for the manufacture of counterfeit drugs.

In a statement, he said the recent seizure of drugs produced in illegal pharma companies in Puducherry has raised several questions. Citizens are concerned about the quality of drugs manufactured in such firms, and are wondering how illegal manufacturing units were able to function for long, evading scrutiny by authorities, he said.

ā€œThe Chief Minister handles the Health portfolio and he owes an explanation to the public on the manufacture and sale of counterfeit drugs, as the incident raises public health concerns. He should inform people on the status of medicines produced in the illegal units. It is important that the Chief Minister allay public concerns,ā€ the Opposition leader further said.

The AINRC-BJP government should also reveal the identities of people who are involved in the illegal business and how they were able to establish units in the UT. The culprits should be given the maximum punishment, he said.

ā€œWe hope the probe by the agencies will beĀ held in an impartial manner. If the government failed to bring the culprits before the law, the DMK will stage protest against the government,ā€ he said.
