Post-graduate students of the Department of History, Bharathiar University (BU), Coimbatore, undertook a field trip to Thirumuruganpoondi and Anupparpalayam in Tiruppur district, for a detailed study of sculpture and metal art.
Sudhakar Nalliyappan and Kumaravel Ramasamy of Yaakkai Heritage Trust, which coordinated the academic internship programme, highlighted to the team of 25 students the distinctness of Thirumuruganpoondi in the Kongu region for stone sculpture and metal art with inscriptions from the medieval period.
Students were also shown stone sculptures and icons made in copper, bronze, brass and silver noted for their unique characteristics, and a wide range of locally made metal objects used for temple rituals.
Orienting the students on the technical nuances of stone sculpture, Sthapathi S. Kanagarathinam explained how the raw stones were brought from the Uthukuli region and the processes and measurement systems followed from sketching on the stone to the completion of the sculpture.
Metal sculpting expert P. Anandhan elaborated on alloy preparation, melting, casting, moulding, finishing and gilding, R. Udhayachandran, Head of the Department of History, Bharathiar University, said.
