The difference between one society and another is its culture, Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court said here on Friday.
While speaking at the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, he said, “The difference between India and Afghanistan or India and Europe is culture. [Culture is] not just our language. But all activities are spiritually inclined…. If we leave this, we lose our identity.”
He further said: “Our temples and sabhas only preserve our identity. Sabhas, especially, keep our society alive.” He added that for 80 years, this sabha, through its functioning, had brought greatness or distinction to the Tamil community.
‘No easy feat’
Stating that 80 years was a long time for a sabha, N. Gopalaswami, former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, said the fact that it had survived and stood tall in its field was no easy feat and required the contributions of many. “This sabha gives opportunities to the upcoming youth and accomplished artists,” he added.
A special souvenir was also released as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations.
Deccan N. Krishnamoorthy, president of the sabha, also spoke during the occasion.
