Youth attempts self-immolation by setting fire to gas cylinder on parked truck

The police have arrested a youth who attempted to take his life by setting fire to a gas cylinder loaded on a parked truck. The incident took place early Friday near the Vettikkattumukku junction at Thalayolaparambu here. The accused, a native of Kadaplamattom, was detained by the Thalayolaparambu police soon after the attempt.

The lorry, which had arrived from Ernakulam carrying LPG cylinders, is usually parked near the Vettikkattumukku junction as its driver is a resident of the area. According to the police, the youth climbed onto the vehicle, broke open a filled gas cylinder, and set it on fire in an attempt to end his life.

A passerby who noticed the flames alerted nearby residents, who informed the police and the Vaikom Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze before it could spread to other cylinders and a major disaster was averted. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the suicide attempt.
