The Dakshina Kannada District and Sessions Court on Saturday sentenced five people to rigorous imprisonment ranging from 12 to 14 years under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, after finding them guilty of drug peddling.

Principal District and Sessions Judge Basavaraj had earlier convicted Lual Daniel Justine Boulo alias Dany, resident of Varthur, Bengaluru; Mohammed Rameez of Uppala, Kasaragod; Moiddin Rasheed from Jumma Masjid Road, Kasaragod; Abdul Ravoof alias Tough Ravoof of Uppala, Kasaragod, and Sabitha alias Chinchu from Madiwala, Bengaluru, for offences under Section 21 (C) of NDPS Act (offences involving commercial quantity of manufactured drugs) and Section 27 (B) of the same Act (consumption of narcotic drugs).

The court sentenced Boulo and Rameez to 14 years RI with ₹1.55 lakh fine; Rasheed to 12 years RI with ₹1.35 lakh fine; Ravoof to 13 years RI and a fine of ₹1.45 lakh, and Sabitha to 12 years RI with a fine of ₹1.35 lakh, said Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy.

Mr. Reddy said the Central Crime Branch Police conducted a raid on June 14, 2022, at a premises in the city and apprehended the accused on the charge of planning to sell MDMA to students.

The police had seized 125 gm of the substance from the accused. A case was registered with the Cyber, Economic and Narcotics Crime Police Station, who had investigated the case and led the prosecution. Principal Public Prosecutor Judith O.M. Crasta conducted the prosecution.
