Police have arrested two persons, including an Assamese, for attempting to circulate counterfeit notes.
Police said a hotel worker working at an eatery on the Thoothukudi – Madurai National Highway at Ettaiyapuram bought a few things from a nearby shop on Saturday and gave ₹500. As the shopkeeper grew suspicious about the genuineness of the currency note, he alerted the Ettaiyapuram police, who picked-up the youth.
When the police grilled the hotel worker, who was identified as Saravanan of Kovilpatti and was under the influence of alcohol even as he was picked-up, he told the police that he got the fake notes from the ‘master’ of his hotel, Kumar Sharma from Assam.
The police also nabbed Kumar Sharma with ₹70,000-worth counterfeit currency notes in the denomination of 500.
Further investigations are on.
