Kerala is set to welcome its first Gen Z post office at CMS College in Kottayam. Functioning as an extension counter of the Kottayam Head Post Office, the new facility aims to create a youth-friendly, tech-driven space that blends digital services, QR code-enabled features, contemporary design elements, and upgraded amenities to engage younger users better.

According to college authorities, the design and execution of the space were shaped with the active involvement of students. “Traditionally, students view post offices as places meant for older generations. Gen Z hardly visits post offices and many are unaware of the services they offer. Our aim is to make this space accessible and help students understand its utility,” an official said.

The post office includes an indoor area connected seamlessly to an outdoor zone, functioning both as a service counter and a contemporary hangout spot. Key design features include picnic table–style seating set against a vertical garden with additional seating crafted from refurbished tyres.

Books, board games

A counter ledge fitted with charging points for laptops and phones caters to students who wish to sit and work. A bookshelf stacked with books and board games add to the inviting ambience. The indoor area also includes a cosy reading nook. The facility houses a booking counter equipped with packaging materials and a My Stamp printer.

According to a senior India Post official, Gen Z interacts more with services such as parcel booking, sending packages, and online shopping deliveries, which makes the revamp relevant. The counter will be officially inaugurated on Monday by Bishop Malayil Sabu Koshy Cheriyan, head of the CSI Central Kerala Diocese, Kottayam.
