The last date for the receipt of applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor (V-C) in the University of Calicut has ended even as the senate is expected to meet again on December 18 to pick its nominee for the search-cum-selection committee.

According to sources, the office of Governor and Chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has got at least eight applications from the University of Calicut alone. The last date for the receipt of the applications was December 5.

The senate had earlier chosen Dharmaraj Adat, former V-C, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, as its nominee to the search panel on August 23. However, he declined to take up the job. Though the senate met again on September 11, it could not reach at a consensus. On October 30, it proposed the name of A. Sabu, member secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment, as its nominee. Mr. Arlekar subsequently formed the search committee, but Mr. Sabu too expressed his unwillingness to be part of it. Meanwhile, the Chancellor issued a notification calling for applications for the post of V-C.

The government, at the same time, approached the Kerala High Court highlighting Mr. Sabu’s resignation and pointing out that the Chancellor’s nominee was not eligible to be in the post. The Chancellor subsequently nominated another person and reissued the notification. The court has now asked the university senate to pick its nominee within 30 days and seek his/her consent. It is not yet clear if the nominee to be chosen by the senate will be willing to be part of the panel.
