Bright headlights
In recent times, several vehicles have been using excessive bright headlights, making it difficult for other motorists to see the road clearly.
Though high-beam usage is prohibited within the city limits, many continue to flout the rule. The glare from these lights not only endangers drivers but also puts pedestrians at risk, as it becomes harder to notice them while crossing.
Immediate intervention from the RTO and the police is essential to bring this growing issue under control.

Need for signboards
To improve road safety in the Thirupparankundram area, there is an urgent need for specific traffic signboards. A large ‘Keep Left’ board is required opposite Narayanaguru Math (near Thirupparankundram Market), as vehicles moving from south to north towards Periyar Bus Stand often take the wrong side near the eastern side of the bridge. Installing this board will help enforce lane discipline.
Similarly, a proper ‘Bus Stop’ sign must be placed at Thirupparankundram Kovil Stop (MLA fund shelter). Despite long queues of commuters, buses halt at random spots, causing confusion.
A designated board would ensure buses stop at the shelter and ease passenger movement.
I urge Thirupparankundram Traffic Police to install these boards at the earliest for smoother traffic regulation and public convenience.

Traffic obstruction
The road from Arasaradi, which connects the Railway Junction, Periyar Bus Stand and Town Hall Road, faces severe congestion during morning peak hours.
The entrance to the Railway Stadium ground becomes difficult to navigate, as walkers leave their two-wheelers parked along the stretch and petty shops selling health drinks obstruct the passage.
Vehicles exiting the stadium and attempting to cross the road median further add to the congestion, creating a major hurdle for road users heading towards Periyar Bus Stand.
Traffic authorities must intervene and regulate movement at this spot to ensure a smooth and safe passage for commuters.

Rising road violations
It is worrying to see an increasing number of two-wheeler riders disregarding basic traffic safety rules by riding without helmets and using mobile phones while driving.
With roadside checks becoming infrequent, violators move about with impunity, endangering not only themselves but also other road users.
Similarly, many car drivers continue to ignore seatbelt rules. I urge the traffic police to conduct frequent checks across the city to curb this growing menace and ensure better compliance with safety regulations.

Damaged road
The four-way main road from Mattuthavani to Surveyor Colony (120 Feet Road) is in a severely damaged condition. Large potholes are scattered along the stretch, making it extremely unsafe for motorists and often leading to accidents.
Hence, the Highways Department took immediate action to repair the road and ensure safe travel for the public.

Absence of pedestrian platforms
Pedestrians remain among the most neglected in Madurai. As the city expands in all directions, the absence of proper platforms for pedestrians and public walking spaces forces people indoors, worsening health issues and adding stress to daily life.
Medical advice stresses the need to avoid sedentary habits and spend time outdoors, but without safe pedestrian spaces, how is it possible?
It is worrying that even new flyovers in the city lack designated walkways. What is more disappointing is the absence of public support for pedestrian rights.
