Police arrested four members of a family from Dharmapuri for allegedly breaking into the Thanjavur residence of former Nagapattinam MP and DMK functionary A.K.S. Vijayan and stealing 87 sovereigns of jewellery.
Mr. Vijayan, who has been elected thrice from the Nagapattinam Lok Sabha constituency and currently serves as Tamil Nadu’s Special Representative in Delhi as well as State secretary of the DMK’s farmers’ wing, owns a house at Sekaran Nagar near the new bus stand in Thanjavur. His wife and daughter were staying there.
According to the police, Mr. Vijayan’s wife Jothimani had left for their native village of Sithamalli along with her daughter on November 28. When Mr. Vijayan and his family returned to the Thanjavur house on December 1, they found the front gate lock broken. Inside, the steel bureau in a bedroom had been forced open and valuables were strewn around. Gold jewellery weighing 87 sovereigns was missing.
Following a complaint, the Tamil University Police formed six special teams and examined CCTV footage from the area. The investigation pointed to a family from Dharmapuri as suspects.
Special teams traced and secured Mohammed Yousuf’s family members — Sadiq Badsha, 33; Moideen, 37; Ayesha Parveen, 30; and Fathima Rasool, 54 — all residents of Royal Nagar, Dharmapuri. Police said the four had confessed to committing the burglary. All four were arrested, and the stolen jewellery was recovered.
