A 60-year-old man from Kattur, who developed severe breathing difficulty following complications from a road accident, underwent successful treatment at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), Tiruchi, recently.

According to a press release issued by the hospital on Sunday, the patient was initially admitted to a private hospital after sustaining injuries in the accident. Owing to prolonged respiratory support, he required intubation, and a tracheostomy was performed.

Although he was successfully weaned off and the endotracheal tube was removed, he developed breathing difficulty one month later, necessitating a second emergency tracheostomy at the same private facility. A flexible optical bronchoscopy performed there revealed a tracheal stenosis measuring approximately 1 cm. The patient was advised to seek further specialised care.

He was subsequently referred to MGMGH for further management and treatment. A detailed video laryngoscopic examination by ENT specialists confirmed stenosis above the tracheostomy level. After a comprehensive assessment, the medical team planned and performed coblation-assisted tracheal dilatation, a minimally invasive technique used to clear obstructed airway passages with precision and reduced tissue damage. A Montgomery T-tube was inserted to maintain airway patency and support healing. The patient is recovering well and is under regular follow-up, the release added.
