Leaders of Andhra Pradesh Primary Teachers Association (APPTA) on Sunday demanded that the government declare January 3, the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, as Women Teachers’ Day.
In a statement, the association’s State president K. Prakash Rao and general secretary M.G. Mehdi said they had submitted representations to the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, urging them to recognise the immense contribution of Savitribai Phule, India’s first female teacher and a pioneer for women’s education. Savitribhai, who relentlessly made efforts, alongside her husband Jyotirao Phule, opened the first girls’ school in 1848 fighting caste discrimination and advocating for women’s rights, which made her a symbol of resilience and empowerment of women in education.
Pointing to the fact that the Telangana government had already announced its decision to celebrate January 3 as Women Teachers’ Day, they said that the TDP-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh should also follow suit.
