Passengers at the Mayiladuthurai Railway Junction have been facing difficulties as coach indicator display boards showing the halt positions of train coaches have remained non-functional for several days.
According to commuters, the electronic display boards on the platforms have not been operating even as upgrade works are under way at the station. While temporary disruptions due to construction are understandable, sources said the coach indicators had been switched off because the private contract for operating the system had lapsed and a new contractor had not yet been appointed.
Social activist A. Apparsundaram alleged that the station had been witnessing repeated instances of administrative neglect. He said the Railways should ensure that the next contractor is identified before an existing contract expires or take responsibility for maintaining essential passenger amenities until a replacement contractor is appointed.
He further pointed out that several floor tiles laid on the first platform were loose or broken, posing a risk to passengers rushing to board trains. There had been frequent incidents of travellers tripping or slipping due to the uneven surface, he said, urging the Railways to carry out immediate repairs.
Mr. Apparsundaram sought special attention to such basic amenities at the Mayiladuthurai station to ensure passenger safety and convenience.
Official sources from the Mayiladuthurai Junction said they would look into the issues.
