The family of a Class 12 student from Pattiswaram, who was declared brain-dead after being assaulted by a group of schoolmates, has demanded the arrest of all those involved in the attack, government job for a family member, and ₹50 lakh as compensation.

Kaviarasan, a student of Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School in Pattiswaram under Kumbakonam division, suffered severe head injuries during a clash between Plus One and Plus Two students near Therodum Keelaveethi on December 4.

Police said he was attacked with a reaper stick by a group of 15 Class 11 students. He was first admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, where he was declared brain-dead on Saturday.

Following his death early Sunday, tension prevailed at the hospital as the student’s parents and relatives gathered in large numbers and refused to accept the body, insisting that all those involved — beyond the 15 already arrested — must be apprehended. They also demanded compensation and a government job for a family member.

The arrested students were remanded to the Juvenile Observation Home in Thanjavur on December 5.

Senior police officials, including Thanjavur DSP Somasundaram, held talks with the family. Later, a few relatives were taken to meet Collector D. Priyanka Pankajam, who assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the State government and urged them to accept the body.

After the assurance, the post-mortem was completed on Sunday afternoon, and the body was handed over to the family. Police have tightened security at the student’s residence, the school, and surrounding areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
