A large number of farmers staged a road blockade on East Coast Road near Thalaignayiru in Nagapattinam district on Monday, protesting against the use of the digital method for assessing crop damage caused by the recent heavy rain.

The agitation took place near Arundavampulam bridge and was led by former panchayat president Govindarasu. Representatives of various farmers’ organisations, including Prabhu, Jayapal and Kamalram of the Kadaimadai Farmers’ Association, and former union councillor T. Selvam, participated in the protest.

Farmers from Tiruvidaimaruthur, Nathapallam, Arundavampulam, Aymoor, Pannatheru, Marachery, Puthur, Manakkudi, NeerMulai and Kadanthethi joined the blockade, raising slogans against the current digital assessment practice. They demanded that crop loss assessment be carried out using the traditional field-record method, compensation of ₹40,000 per acre for rain-affected paddy, and proper desilting of drains and canals.

Revenue and police officials held talks with the agitators. After discussions, the farmers agreed to temporarily withdraw the blockade.

Traffic on the Tirutturaipoondi–Nagapattinam stretch of the East Coast Road was disrupted for nearly two hours due to the protest.
