Members of the CPI(M), VCK, and CPI-ML staged a protest here on Monday, condemning the implementation of the four new labour codes by the Union BJP government.

R. Guruvel, CPI(M) district secretary, stated, “The new labour codes are specifically designed to favour corporate welfare, and their implementation will only lead to attacks on labour welfare in the country.”

He added, “The newly adopted labour codes, which came into force from November 21, legally empower employers to reduce workers’ wages and pay less than the minimum wage.” Mr. Guruvel further asserted that the right to form trade unions would be heavily restricted, and the right to strike would be made a privilege of bygone times.

He emphasized that the codes legitimize the attacks on the hard-earned rights of Indian workers and noted that the new labour laws implemented by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government would bring a great disaster to the living standards of the working class.

“These laws will give more profit to corporates and grant employers permission for the non-implementation of labour welfare laws. The Union government now thinks these laws will remain untouched by workers’ agitation across the country,” he stated.

However, Mr. Guruvel warned, “Past experiences, like the farmers’ strike in New Delhi, should remind them that the workers’ strength will always overcome any injustices.”

Similar protest were organised against the four labour codes in Sivaganga.
