Workers of the CITU and VCK staged a protest here on Monday urging the Union government to withdraw the four labour codes. The protesters were detained by the police and later released in the evening.

CITU general secretary M. Balasubramaniam, said the NDA government should repeal the anti-labour laws and safeguard workers’ hard-won rights.

“The four labour codes termed by the government and corporates as pro-labour are actually against the employees and workers. To conceal the true evil nature of the laws, the government added a few beneficial provisions to mask the core dilution of workers’ rights,” he added.

In the long run, he said, the law would enable employers to sack the workers at their will without inviting any repercussions from the government.

Boominathan, VCK workers union, Madurai city coordinator, said, the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi coming up with such a law against the working class of the country, was not new.

“So, in a bid to oppose the four labour codes, like-minded parties like the VCK and the CPI(M), among others, have joined together to fight against the laws,” he added.

Further, he appealed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to staunchly oppose the four labour codes at any cost. “If the laws proposed are implemented, it will have a grave effect on the working-class population in the country,” he said.
