Sahaja Samrudha and Sahaja Seeds will organise a two-day Maghi Sambhrama on December 13 and 14 in the city to showcase winter seeds and agricultural produce, apart from their culinary possibilities.
To be held at the Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry, Maghi Sambhrama is also an effort to introduce younger generations to traditional Maghi-season foods and produce, which they are oblivious to in the present times.
This includes the freshly harvested avarekai, togari kai, tender groundnut, purple yam, red-husked jowar, and vine potatoes, all of which will be on sale.
Krishnaprasad of Sahaja Samrudha said the onset of Maghi, marked by misty mornings, also signals an important phase for farmers as major crops reach the harvest stage. The mela will highlight the seasonal abundance of traditional winter crops and produce, he added.
“Maghi is a key agricultural period when the harvesting of ragi, paddy, and groundnut commences alongside produce from avarekai (field beans), togari (red gram), alasande or cowpea, and green gram. A variety of gourds, including sorekayi or bottle gourd, kumbalakayi (pumpkin), and hirekayi (ridge gourd), mature during this time, while root crops such as sweet potato, yam, and several medicinal herbs are also ready for harvest,” said Mr. Krishnaprasad.
Sahaja Seeds will also set up a stall offering seeds of winter vegetables such as carrot, watermelon, muskmelon, beetroot, cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce, along with desi varieties including siddi sanna, navara, and jagalooru ragi.
Food stalls will serve a range of avarekalu-based dishes — avarekalu uppittu, dosa, ragi mudde with mashed avarekalu sambar, avarekalu bath and even avarekalu jamoon, according to the organisers.
A display of various gourds and Christmas decorative dolls made from gourds will be an added attraction.
In addition, millets, organic and value-added products, natural cosmetics, bamboo items, traditional toys and indigenous rice varieties will be on display and for sale as part of the Maghi Sambhrama.
