Member of Telangana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Sarita Gogula, visited Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Welfare Gurukul School, Shamirpet, on Saturday, and raised serious concerns about its conditions.

The school has a strength of about 1,200 students but lacks adequate toilet and bathroom facilities, even as the existing ones lack doors.

Ms. Sarita’s visit comes at a time when students from the facility recently staged a protest at a police station over the lack of basic facilities.

In her inspection and interaction, students reported that the mid-day meal scheme was not being implemented properly. They alleged that some teachers are rude in their behaviour, and pointed to negligence by school in-charge.

Students also flagged health concerns and said several of them are suffering from skin rashes and other ailments, reportedly linked to water quality issues at the place.

Ms. Sarita instructed officials to address the concerns within a week, including medical examination of students, and improving basic facilities. Noting that the school is currently operating in a rented building, she said the management should undertake repairs urgently.
