A majority of the 1,678 students of the Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, who received their degrees during the 34th Graduation Day ceremony were first-generation graduates.
Of the total students, 16 of them were differently-abled. In all, 1,200 under-graduate students and 478 post-graduate students received their degrees from the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education N. Shenbagalakshmi in the presence of the Principal M.R. Yezhili.
Success of first-generation graduates in securing their degrees was vital as they will eventually foster the academic progress of the forthcoming generations with a sense of purpose, Prof. Shenbagalakshmi said.
The over 150-year-old college was ranked among the best higher educational institutions in the State, she pointed out.
She also added that the highest budgetary allocation in Tamil Nadu was for education. Education rooted in discipline will place the students in good stead for future progress.
