Having run for about 51 km in a little above seven hours from Uppinangady to reach Mangaluru by 4 p.m. on Monday, 44-year-old Andrea was ready by 6 a.m. on Tuesday at Kottara Chowki in Mangaluru to start her coastal Karnataka leg on the 361st day of her ‘Run Around the World’ feat.
After a brief talk with a group of runners of Mangalore Runners Club to share her experience of the run so far, Ms. Andrea started her run towards Udupi at 6.30 a.m. by pushing her 15-kg buggy, which contained her luggage and the water bottle. The MRC members ran along with her till Kuloor bridge and Ms. Andrea proceeded for another 51-km run for the day.
Ms. Andrea will be running till Karwar. From there she is set to take a train to Goa and then fly to Istanbul where she is set to resume the run after celebrating Christmas with her family members. She has set to run a total of 26,000 km by June 2026 and reach London, where she started the run in December 2024.
Talking to The Hindu on Monday evening, Ms. Andrea said she quit her comfortable job of a nurse to run for the cause of having a world that is kinder and more inclusive. “This journey sheds light on palliative care, hospice care, and suicide prevention — causes that highlight the power of connection, dignity, and support,” she says.
Ms. Andrea revealed that she did not wait for any sponsorship to take up this world run. “I am using my own earnings. I am networking with fellow runners and social organisations in carrying out this journey. Every day is a new experience where I connect with a variety of people. I am a minimalist and a vegan. Yes, this journey brings in a little bit of pain, which I have taken in my stride to experience this fascinating world that we live in,” she says with modesty.
Her India leg of the run started from Kancheepuram on December 2. She has run past Kolar, Hoskote, Nelamangala, Channapatna, Marenahalli and Uppinangady to reach Mangaluru on December 15.
She is giving live updates of her run on her website www.andrearunstheworld.com. Here she gives insight into her running activity that she took up since 2011 when she quit smoking.
