The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Wednesday conducted a public hearing to solicit views and objections on leasing of limestone kanger quarry to Chettinad Cement Corporation (P) Limited at Valajanagaram here.
As per the proposal, the private company will operate quarrying activities at Kallankurichi at two sites. While the first site will come up on 15.14 hectares of land, the size of the second site will be 3.42 hectares. More than 2.40 lakh tonnes of lime kanger will be quarried in the first quarry. The number will be 64,000 tonne in the second quarry. The Opencast method will be employed to quarry the lime kanger. No drilling and blasting will be used.
Collector P. Rathinasamy presided over the hearing.
A large number of people, including residents of Kallankurichi and environmental activists, participated. Several participants expressed their apprehension over establishing the quarry. They said it would cause severe air pollution. Some spoke in favour of the proposal. Some urged the autorities to ensure employment opportunities to local residents.
The methods of implementing the project were explained to the public.
The officials saidt the views and comments expressed by the public had been recorded and sent to State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority in Chennai. for further action.Â
