Civil works and demarcation of shop plots under way on Yanaikulam ground at Singarathope in Tiruchi.

Preparatory work is under way at Yanaikulam ground in Tiruchi for relocation of Burma Bazaar traders as part of the City Corporation’s initiative to organise street vending and decongest key commercial areas around Rockfort Teppakulam.
The civic body has identified a two-acre Yanaikulam ground near Singarathope to accommodate traders who have long operated along the congested stretches. The relocation is aimed at easing traffic congestion in busy commercial streets and improving pedestrian safety. In the first phase, traders from Burma Bazaar, particularly those operating near Vanapattarai Street, have been allotted space.
A total of 158 shops is planned at around 30,000 sq. ft. Of these, 95 shops, each measuring 80 sq. ft., are allotted to Burma Bazaar traders at a monthly rent of ₹4,400, excluding GST, with a refundable security deposit of ₹50,000. The remaining 63 shops, each measuring 64 sq. ft., are earmarked for other traders operating near the Main Guard Gate and Teppakulam areas now.
Earlier, the Corporation had assured traders that permanent shops would be constructed after collecting construction charges and deposits. However, traders were later instructed to relocate their existing metal-box shops to the new site. Following a survey, boundaries have been demarcated, and some traders have begun constructing their shops. Traders have also sought the provision of basic amenities, including toilets and parking facilities, at the site.
Meanwhile, vendors who were relocated from the Teppakulam area to Old Madurai Road on November 13 are still in the process of setting up their shops. The vendors are installing metal frames and tent-like structures to protect their merchandise, resulting in a delay in the commencement of business.
They said they expect to complete the work and begin operations within a week.
