The Belthangady police on Thursday made a public announcement about the order passed by Puttur Assistant Commissioner Stella Verghese externing activist Mahesh Shetty Thimarody from Dakshina Kannada to Manvi in Raichur district. The order was based on a report by the police about Thimarody being booked in 24 criminal cases and the need to extern him to maintain law and order.
Ms. Verghese passed the order on December 17 to extern Thimarody from December 16 to September 16, 2026.
On a writ petition by Thimarody questioning the earlier externment order passed on September 18, High Court judge Suraj Govindaraj set it aside on November 17. The judge had directed the Assistant Commissioner to pass a reasoned order by specifying the clauses of Section 55 of the Karnataka Police Act under which it had been issued. The judge further said the new order should be passed within a fortnight from the date of receipt of the copy of the High Court order.
After issuing notices to Thimarody, Ms. Verghese passed the new order of externment.
