Coimbatore hospital performs rare intra-cardiac repair on infant from Nigeria

Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in Coimbatore recently performed a rare intra-cardiac repair on a one-year-old infant from Nigeria.

According to the hospital, the baby, weighing 5.9 kilograms, was brought to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. After a clinical assessment by Dr. S. Devaprasath, Consultant Interventional Paediatric Cardiologist, the child was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect known as Complete Atrioventricular (AV) Canal Defect, accompanied by Pulmonary Artery Hypertension. The condition, involving multiple holes in the heart and a single common valve instead of two separate valves, required corrective surgery.

The surgery was led by Dr. S. Vijay Sadasivam, Consultant Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, with support from his surgical team. Hospital authorities said the infant has recovered and is now ready to return to Nigeria.
