Observing a token strike on Saturday, fishermen associations in Rameswaram urged the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to immediately rescue two fishermen who went missing while engaged in fishing activities.
An urgent meeting convened here passed three resolutions.
Speaking to media persons, the fishermen leaders said that on December 6, a fisherman, Arockia Kings, went missing while engaged in fishing in Palk Straits. The family members urged the government to search and hand over the fisherman without any further delay.
Similarly, on December 19, Ganesan, a fisherman, who was repairing an anchored mechanised boat at the Rameswaram jetty, reportedly went missing. Expressing shock and concern, the family members appealed to the Marine Police to help rescue their breadwinner.
The fishermen associations, through a resolution, pleaded to the authorities concerned to immediately deploy professional divers and rescue the fishermen.
As a token of expressing their unity, the fishermen announced that they would not venture into the sea for fishing on Saturday (Dec 20). The officials at the Fisheries Department also said that they had not issued tokens due to the one-day strike.
The fishermen leaders said that the Tamil Nadu government should give the compensation to the two families as they have no clue about the trace of their breadwinner till Saturday. The family members were deeply in distress and required psychological support and counselling. The district administration should provide the assistance immediately, the resolution stated.
