Bharathiar University releases training manual on mass cultivation of Spirulina for agri-preneurs

Bharathiar University (BU) has released a training manual for mass cultivation of Spirulina, harvesting, processing, and product development.

The training manual was released at a training programme during this week on ‘Entrepreneurship Development through Spirulina Production and Marketing Techniques’ organised by the university’s Department of Environmental Sciences.

More than 180 participants from across India, including students, research scholars, faculty and entrepreneurs received hands-on training and witnessed live demonstrations at the Algal Biorefinery Pond facility in the Green Technology and Algology Laboratory and Open Raceway Pond facility maintained by the department with the purpose of translating scientific research into scalable entrepreneurial ventures.

Presiding over the inaugural session of the two-day programme, T. Parimelazhagan, Dean, Faculty of Science, BU, released the training manual prepared by R. Rajkumar, Organising Secretary, and Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences.

A. V. Gnanasambandam, Managing Director & CEO, Agribusiness Incubation Society-Technology Business Incubator, Directorate of Agribusiness Development, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore; and C. Thirumala Rao, District Development Manager, NABARD, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris District, oriented the participants on the incubation support and commercialisation pathways in Spirulina-based enterprises, and financial assistance and institutional support for Agri-entrepreneurs.

Addressing the valedictory session on Friday (December 19, 2025), R. Rajavel, Registrar, BU, the programme envisaged promoting and generating sustainable green employment opportunities.

B. Kayalvizhi, Assistant Director, MSME Development and Facilitation Office, Ministry of MSME, Government of India, Coimbatore, elaborated on the schemes supporting bioresource-based entrepreneurs. Ms. Kayalvizhi joined the other dignitaries in presenting participants with certificates.
