Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan has recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation and National Investigation Agency into the seizure of counterfeit drugs manufactured in fake pharma companies in Puducherry.
A note from Lok Niwas said the Lt. Governor has recommended the CBI and NIA probe based on details emerging out of the investigation carried out by the CB-CID wing of Puducherry police. A national-level investigation was necessary as people from other States were involved in the case. Political parties and social organisations have demanded a probe by the CBI, the note said.
“Considering all these factors, the Lt. Governor has recommended investigation of the case by the CBI and the NIA,” it said
The illegal manufacturing of medicines in Puducherry surfaced after Agra police registered a case in connection with fake drugs. A joint team of officials from the Drugs Standard Control Organisation and Drugs Department, Puducherry, had in September raided a godown in Mettupalyam and seized empty capsules, tablets and medicine packaging materials worth around ₹99.47 lakh.
Subsequently, the CB-CID police registered a case and sealed several godowns for illegal manufacturing and stocking of drugs. The government also formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case. The SIT had made arrests, including Raja alias Velliappan. The Puducherry police have also shared financial transactions in the case with the Enforcement Directorate.
The Congress had given a representation to the Lt. Governor demanding a probe by the CBI to unearth the truth behind the illegal medicine manufacturing business in Puducherry.
