The Department of History, GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with INTACH Visakhapatnam, organised a curated heritage walk through Visakhapatnam’s historic Old Town (One Town) area on Monday. The initiative turned the city’s streets into an open classroom and introduced students to the lived presence of history in everyday spaces.

Titled “Visakhapatnam Through Time: Learn While You Walk”, the initiative brought together students and teachers from GITAM University, Visakha Valley School, Timpany Senior Secondary School, and Delhi Public International School, encouraging cross institutional academic engagement.

The walk covered key heritage landmarks including the Town Hall (1901–1904), St. John’s Church (1844), Queen Mary’s School building, St. Aloysius Anglo-Indian High School (1847), the Old Lighthouse (1903), and the iconic Hawa Mahal, the sea-facing summer palace of the Maharajas of Jeypore. Through guided discussions at each site, students gained insights into colonial urban planning, maritime history, civic administration and royal patronage that shaped the city’s historical development.
