In an effort to reduce the number of road accidents caused due to rash, negligent, and drunk-driving, the State police will launch a State-wide special drive against erring motorists from December 24 to December 31, ahead of the New Year celebrations.

In a circular issued by the office of the Additional Director General of police (Traffic and Road Safety) on Saturday, to the heads of the city commissionorates and district police chiefs, the officials have been directed to take stringent action against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.

The directive follows a meeting chaired by Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, former Supreme Court judge and chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, held on Friday to review road safety measures in the State. The committee reportedly observed that incidents of road accidents caused by drunk-driving tend to rise significantly during festive and New Year celebrations, leading to an increase in fatalities and injuries.

In view of this, the police have been instructed to intensify enforcement across all police units in the State. According to the order, all unit heads have been directed to ensure that station house officers conduct a special enforcement drive in their jurisdictions. Apart from drunk and drive cases, the police have been instructed to book cases against motorists for violations including riding without helmets, driving without seat belts, overspeeding, wheeling, triple-riding, and using mobile phones while driving.

The special drive will be implemented across all police commissionerates and district police units, including Bengaluru city and KGF, under the supervision of senior officers.
