The Labour Department recently inspected meat and vegetable shops in the district and seized unverified weighing instruments.

Following a complaint received through the control room at the District Collectorate, officials inspected shops in the Ammapettai and Guruvareddiyur areas. Teams led by Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Enforcement), Erode, K. Jayalakshmi, comprising Labour Sub-Inspectors, Assistant Labour Inspectors and Stamp Inspectors, verified whether the weighing and measuring instruments used by traders, including electronic weighing machines, weights and measures, had been re-verified and stamped within the prescribed period.

It was found that several traders were using weighing and measuring instruments for commercial purposes without proper re-verification and stamping, in violation of the Legal Metrology Act. A total of 98 items were seized, including 15 electronic weighing machines, nine table scales, nine beam balances, 60 weights and five measures.

The Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Enforcement) warned traders that strict action would be taken under the Legal Metrology Act if electronic weighing machines, weights and measures were used without mandatory re-verification and stamping. Offenders would face seizure of instruments, imposition of fines and further legal proceedings, officials said.
