The Standing Committee on Academic Matters of Delhi University on Monday sought revisions in some History and Economics electives, particularly in the one titled ‘Economics and Gender’, according to members of the group.
The move came during a meeting when elective courses were proposed for the second semester of the Post-Graduate Curriculum Framework (PGCF).
The committee seeking to include topics such as intimate partner violence, domestic violence, workplace violence, and crimes against women in unit three of the said course caused a stir in the meeting, with some members arguing that it had “nothing to do with economics”.
Monami Sinha, a member of the committee said, “The Head of the Department of Economics responded by asserting that these themes constitute an important area of economic inquiry. She noted that there exists substantial scholarly literature and theoretical work on the economic costs of violence against women and its implications for growth and development at the national level.”
During a discussion of the History syllabus, some members argued that it allocated “too much space to global history”. Other readings that were dropped included Shireen Moosvi’s “Work and Gender in Mughal India”
The initial syllabus proposals are submitted by the respective department’s Committee of Courses, after which the Standing Committee of Academic Matters will present them to the academic council for approval.
The proposals are for the second semester of the PG curriculum under the National Education Policy 2020 and are meant to align with the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework. This was the first year students studied under the new structure, and students in PGCF will soon enter their second semester.
